Many women first learn of their pregnancy after a missed period, but they could also experience early pregnancy symptoms, including:

  • Fatigue
  • Nausea with or without vomiting
  • Increased urination
  • Tender, swollen breasts
  • Bloating
  • Cramping
  • Constipation
  • Food aversions
  • Moodiness
  • Light spotting
  • Nasal congestion

While these symptoms don’t necessarily mean you are pregnant, taking a pregnancy test is the only way to be certain. However, sometimes there is a waiting period between when your symptoms start and when you can take a test.

How Pregnancy Tests Work

Pregnancy tests work by detecting the presence of the hormone called hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which can be detected in the blood and urine. It takes time for this hormone to build up to detectable levels.

If you think you may be pregnant, it can be hard to wait to take an at-home test. According to the Cleveland Clinic, hCG levels may be detectable as early as 10 days after conception, but tests are most accurate after you’ve missed your period.

Pregnancy Testing Tips

The following tips can help you receive the most accurate results from your at-home test:

  • Test first thing in the morning if possible
  • Avoid drinking excess fluid prior to testing (hCG may become diluted)
  • Read the instructions before testing
  • Follow the timing recommendations on the box
  • Look closely if using a two-line test. Even a faint positive line means a positive result.
  • If you receive a negative test but believe you may still be pregnant, test again in a few days to a week.

If done correctly, at-home pregnancy tests can be up to 99% accurate, but false results can occur. After learning you’re pregnant from an at-home test, confirming your pregnancy with a lab-quality pregnancy test is a good next step.
